DUBOIS – Bedford North Lawrence rallied from a four-run deficit to conquer Northeast Dubois 11-6 during high school baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.
The Stars (1-3) erupted for nine runs during the final two innings to record their first win of the season. The Jeeps, who owned a 6-2 lead after the fifth inning, dropped to 0-2.
Logan Shelton’s two-run home run drew BNL even in the sixth, and Dalton Nikirk drove in the go-ahead run during the five-run outburst. The Stars added key insurance runs in the seventh as Cole Karr, Shelton and Ethan Baer had RBI hits.
“I’m happy for the kids,” BNL coach Jeff Callahan said. “They had us on the ropes but we were able to bust it open. I’m happy with the way they picked each other up.”
BNL took an early 2-0 lead as Evan Waggoner walloped a solo homer and Nikirk drove in the second run. But the Jeeps bounced back with two runs in the second and four more in the fourth.
Treyvn Stile earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of relief work. He struck out 7 and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to keep Dubois at bay.
“That was key,” Callahan said.
Waggoner reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with two walks. Shelton (3 RBIs) and Nikirk had two hits each.
“The last couple of days we’ve done a lot of hitting and talked a lot about our approach,” Callahan said. “We had better approach over the last three innings, all the way through the order.”
BNL will make its home debut on Thursday against Brown County, then host Rockford (Mich.) in a doubleheader on Friday before visiting Evansville Reitz on Saturday.
