NASHVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence’s cross country campaign came to a conclusion during the IHSAA semistate at Brown County on Saturday.
The Stars had two individuals in the boys race and a single competitor in the girls event. The top 10 individuals who were not part of the top six qualifying teams advanced to the state finals in Terre Haute on Oct. 27.
In the girls race, BNL sophomore Myra Roberts was 84th overall in the field of 180 competitors. Roberts, the first BNL runner to compete in the third stage of the state tournament series in five years, crossed the line in 21:00.8.
“While it wasn’t the big (personal record) we were hoping for, she ran her second-fastest race ever,” BNL coach Jill Vance said. “She had a solid race and I know she’ll be back next year for another try. This is a great foundation for her to build on.”
Bloomington North won the team title with 94 points, clipping Floyd Central by only two points. Edgewood’s Annalyssa Crain was the individual champion in 17:59.3.
In the boys race, BNL’s Cooper Holmes was 130th overall in 18:05.2, while teammate Ethan Vaughn was 136th in 18:09.8. The juniors were the first BNL boys to race in the semistate in four years.
“What a great experience,” BNL coach Jon Calhoun said. “I thought my guys fought and battled throughout the race. It’s going to make Ethan and Cooper know what to expect during their senior year. Hopefully we have a chance to make it as a team next year.”
Bloomington South won the boys team championship with 81 points. Caleb Futter of Christian Academy was the overall winner in 15:31.5.
