BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence finished 9th in the 18-team Bloomington South Invitational at Bloomington Country Club in the girls golf season opener on Monday.
The Stars posted a team total of 387. Defending state champion Evansville North won the title with 294 while Carmel was a distant second with 313.
BNL struggled to post any quality scores. Ashley Chase, one of the three veteran juniors returning from last season’s trip to the IHSAA state finals, paced the Stars with an 89 that included a birdie on the second hole.
Olivia Sanders fired a 91, and Addyson Bailey added a 92 with a birdie on the par-5 first hole.
“I would have thought one of the juniors would show up, but they didn’t,” BNL coach Aaron Sanders said. “They didn’t hit very many quality shots. I didn’t see too many good shots going to the greens, They have to do better, they have to have a different mindset. Their minds weren’t in it.”
Freshman newcomers Samantha Biel (116) and Nora Howat (115) completed the scoring for the Stars.
“It’s tough for those younger players, with the speed of those greens and the level of competition,” Sanders said. “They battled all day long, but they’re pretty green. It was their first time to play an 18-hole tourney at the high school level, but they never gave up. I feel confident they’ll get better”
BNL will compete in the State Preview at Prairie View on Saturday.
