CORYDON – Bedford North Lawrence’s Derek Hutchens and Drake Huber finished second in their respective weight classes during the Old Capital City Classic at Corydon on Saturday.
The Stars finished fifth in the 8-team field, which was topped by Gibson Southern with 383 points.
Hutchens, last year’s event winner at 126 pounds, was the runner-up at 132, while Huber was second at 160.
“Both of those kids are starting to figure out how to do things the right way,” BNL coach Roy Bruce Jr. said. “I am so proud of the way they have bought in to what we are teaching.
“They are figuring out that when they do things the proper way and walk on the mat with the proper attitude, good things happen.”
Gibson Southern’s Christin Polen topped Hutchens (18-7) in the 132 final, while Gibson Southern’s Clay Singleton topped Huber (18-6) in the 160 final.
Other top finishers for the Stars included Conner Smith (fourth at 145), James Covey (fourth at 195) and Byron Kyger (fourth at 285).
“This will help them as we head into conference and the tournament later this month,” Bruce said. “When an athlete buys in and believes what his coaches are saying, get rid of the outside distractions, they can prosper and strive.”
BNL will return to action on Thursday in a home double-dual with Paoli and Owen Valley.
