GALENA – Bedford North Lawrence finished fourth in the Hoosier Hills Conference boys cross country race at Floyd Central on Saturday.
The Stars totaled 109 points. Jennings County won the team title with 30 points, edging Floyd Central (34).
In the girls meet, BNL settled for sixth with 159 points. The Highlanders cruised to the championship with 20 points.
Cooper Holmes paced the Stars in the boys meet, finishing 16th in 17:27.45. Isaak Gilbert was 23rd in 17:48.59, and Ethan Vaughn was 24th in 17:55.95.
“Today was a season stepping stone,” BNL coach Jon Calhoun said. “Our team goal was to improve at conference from last year. Coming in fourth is a testament to how hard we’ve worked and improved.
“We battled, packed it up and kept on fighting. I can’t ask anything more from my guys. This team kept up the energy that will take us to the next level, which is performing well and getting out of the sectional. We have to believe we should be there to make it happen.”
Carter Leak paced the Panthers as the individual winner in 16:25.45, while teammate Alex Hendrix was second in 16:35.02.
BNL rested its top two runners in the girls meet, leaving a cast of freshmen and sophomores to carry most of the load. Grace Tanksley (33rd in 22:23.24) and Danielle Kittaka (35th in 22:34.41) set the pace, while Lynnae Greene (22:40.45) and Anna Butler set personal records.
The Stars will return to action in the IHSAA sectional at BNL on Oct. 6. The top five teams, plus the top 10 individuals who are not members of qualifying teams, will advance to the regional.
