Stars finish 3rd at Country Club

BNL’s Ethan Stanley carded a 75 at Bloomington Country Club on Thursday.

BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence completed its regular season with a third-place finish against sectional foes Bloomington South and Bloomington North at Bloomington Country Club on Thursday afternoon.

No.19 South won the event with a team score of 312, while No.14 North was second with 323. The Stars, playing on the course that will host the IHSAA sectional on Monday, posted a distant 346.

Ethan Stanley paced BNL with a solid 3-over 75, but the rest of the lineup struggled on the quick greens. Stanley carded one birdie (on the 10th) and had 14 pars.

“That was a good score today,” BNL coach Mike Wright said. “He was able to handle the greens better than the others. They were really quick.”

Cole Sanders (89) was the only other BNL player to break 90.

Drew Todd paced the Panthers with a 2-under 70 to earn medalist honors. Logan Vernon fired a 74 for the Cougars.

The top three teams in the 13-team sectional (plus the top three individuals who are not members of qualifying teams) will advance to the regional at Champions Pointe on June 6.

“We’ve been within striking distance of both of them,” Wright said of the gap between the Stars and the Bloomington foes. “Today we just didn’t handle the greens. When you’re off the fairway, especially on fast greens, they’re not going to hold. It makes getting up and down more challenging.

“That’s why we play this match when we do, so we’re prepared for it. If we want to get out, we need to show up and two-putt. Just go out and take care of business, and not shoot the high score of the year like we did today.”
