CARMEL – Bedford North Lawrence, which has qualified for back-to-back trips to the IHSAA state finals, made a return trip to the host course and finished 15th in the State Preview Tournament at Prairie View on Saturday afternoon.
The Stars, paced by Addyson Bailey’s round of 87, posted a team total of 387, Top-ranked Evansville North won the 18-team event with 303.
Bailey birdied the par-3 15th hole and carded an impressive 41 on the back nine. Olivia Sanders, battling through an illness, overcame a rough first hole and fired a 95.
“It’s one of those courses that jumps up and grabs you,” BNL coach Aaron Sanders said. “You’re plugging right along and then you can hit a rough stretch, but the girls had good attitudes all day. Bailey had a good back nine and she’s hitting the ball a lot better than she’s been hitting it.”
Ashley Chase added a 97 and freshman Samantha Biel had a solid back nine (48) in her first look at the challenging layout and capped BNL’s scoring with 108.
“As a freshman, Sam has never seen a course anything like this,” Sanders said. “She can flat hit a golf ball, she just needs to clean things up around the greens a little bit and she’ll be OK.
“They all have some different issues right now. It’s early in the season and we’ll just keep cleaning things up.”
Faith Johnson paced North (which had four scorers in the 70s) to the team title with a 73.
BNL will return to action on Tuesday on the Donald Ross Course against Springs Valley. The scheduled match on Thursday with Washington has been cancelled.
