MADISON – Bedford North Lawrence’s upset bid for the Hoosier Hills Conference championship came up agonizingly short.
No.12 Floyd Central, the tournament favorite, needed a fifth-man tiebreaker to clip the Stars and defend its crown on Monday afternoon at Sunrise Golf Course. The Highlanders and Stars both carded 315, but Floyd claimed the title by two strokes with an 85 from the final score.
BNL made the Highlanders sweat after taking a one-shot lead at the turn, but Floyd Central escaped by the narrowest of margins.
“We gave it a run,” said BNL coach Mike Wright, whose club last won the league in 2016. “We should be happy with the way we played. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
Ethan Stanley, who was forced to take an unplayable lie on his opening tee shot and needed 36 putts during his tour, paced the Stars with a 4-over 76 while earning All-HHC honors for the third straight season.
Cole Sanders had 3 birdies during his round of 79, and Cameron Jeskewich had 1 birdie while posting 79 as they both claimed honorable mention status for all-league honors.
Jeven Adams capped BNL’s scoring with an 81, whole Colton Spires came home with 87.
“It’s good to see all those guys playing well.” Wright said. “It’s kind of an unfulfilling feeling, because I don’t think I’ve ever lost a title on a tiebreaker. But when you see the big picture of where we’ve been and where we need to go, we have to be happy. We’re going to get better.”
Columbus East’s Kody Reynolds was the medalist with a 1-under 71. Harrison Eades topped the Highlanders with a 77.
BNL will return to action on May 21 at Seymour.
