SEYMOUR – Bedford North Lawrence crowned two conference champions while finishing third in the Hoosier Hills Conference boys meet on Saturday.
BNL’s Andrew Swenson and Jacob Werley won their individual events, and the Stars – with only 10 athletes on the roster – scored 193 points. Floyd Central won the meet with 383 (while waiting out a length delay when the pool lights went out) while Jeffersonville was second with 198.
BNL’s Andrew Swenson won two races, the only double winner in the meet. He shattered the pool record, held by former BNL state champion Dan Schultz, in the 100-yard backstroke, touching first in 52.14. He also claimed the 200 individual medley in 1:58.80.
“He was really going after that record,” BNL coach Terry Tlustek said. “That was a big statement.”
Werley had two duels with Floyd Central standout Henry Lang in the freestyle races. Lang won the 200 in 1:47.88, while Werley was second in 1:49.77, but Werley came back to take the 100 in 49.01.
“The game plan was to get out in front early in the 100, mess with his head a little,” Tlustek said. “It worked. It was enough to get the job done.”
The Stars were second in two relays. Swenson, Alexander Swenson, Werley and Dayson Sorrells combined to clock 1:43.10 in the 200 medley, and that foursome posted 3:30.28 in the 400 free.
BNL’s girls will return to action on Feb. 2 in the sectional.
