BNL pounds down North Daviess

Evan Waggoner had 2 hits as BNL thumped North Daviess 8-4 on Monday afternoon.

ELNORA – Bedford North Lawrence exploded for 5 runs in the second inning while thumping North Daviess 8-4 during high school baseball action on Monday afternoon.

The Stars (13-10) pounded out 13 hits while winning their final road game of the regular-season campaign.

BNL did all its damage with two outs in the second, with Ethan Baer (two-run single) and Zane Harrison (2-run double) clubbing the key hits off North Daviess starter Chris Reed. The clutch hits were huge.

“We’ve talked about that all season,” BNL coach Jeff Callahan said. “We knew it would be a tough game, and beating quality teams comes down to getting key two-out hits.”

The Stars added two runs in the third on RBI singles by Brown and Baer, and Logan Shelton launched a RBI double in the fourth.

“That gave us a little more cushion,” Callahan said. “Baseball is a such a mental game if you can extend the lead.”

The Cougars (6-8) took a 1-0 lead on Shom Berry’s lead-off home run to right, but BNL starter Garrett Watson (4-1) settled into a grove and allowed only one more earned run while earning the victory.

Braydon Brown worked the final 2 1/3 innings and escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the seventh. Berry was 3-for-3 and scored twice. The Stars were guilty of 4 errors.

BNL’s offense came from all spots in the lineup. Baer, Evan Waggoner, Harrison, Trevyn Stiles, Shelton and Brown all had 2 hits. Shelton and Watson scored twice, while Baer, Harrison and Brown all drove in two runs.

“We’re not overly dependent on one or two guys to carry the load,” Callahan said. “We have guys up and down the lineup picking it up when someone is down, because we all know how hard it is to hit a baseball.”

BNL will host Jennings County (a preview of the first-round sectional clash between the conference rivals) and celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday.
